{"id":1250,"date":"2012-08-26T10:03:28","date_gmt":"2012-08-26T04:33:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.khaitan.org\/blog\/?p=1250"},"modified":"2012-08-26T13:36:56","modified_gmt":"2012-08-26T08:06:56","slug":"buffett-or-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.khaitan.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/buffett-or-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Buffett or Jobs?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It took me more than 6-months each to read <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Snowball:_Warren_Buffett_and_the_Business_of_Life\">The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life<\/a> few years ago, followed by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Jobs_(book)\">Steve Jobs biography<\/a> last year. Though, I reached the end of Steve Jobs&#8217;s bio, 50% of the book is still unread.<\/p>\n<p>Then last week, I read two great articles, one in Wired magazine critiquing Steve Jobs&#8217;s &#8216;<em>social-etiquettes-are-for-the-weak<\/em>&#8216; style, titled, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/business\/2012\/07\/ff_stevejobs\/all\/\">The Story of Steve Jobs: An Inspiration or a Cautionary Tale?<\/a> followed by Fortune magazine&#8217;s feature on <a href=\"http:\/\/management.fortune.cnn.com\/2012\/08\/22\/sees-candies-buffett-berkshire\/\">See&#8217;s candies<\/a> (the iPad version has audio\/video of Buffett) which alluded to Warren Buffett&#8217;s &#8216;<em>always-looking-for-a-situation-to-crack-a-joke<\/em>&#8216; management style.<\/p>\n<p>Here are two great leaders whose works are impregnated into the minds of the entrepreneurs and are tested during trying times, and then with opposing styles.<\/p>\n<p>I personally get conflicted of which approach is better. Some of the thoughts I keep pondering:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you hire a missionary or mercenary?<\/li>\n<li>Empathy with people or metric-driven connectedness?<\/li>\n<li>Products over dead bodies?<\/li>\n<li>Micro-management vs. trusting your team?<\/li>\n<li>Honest with your opinion or diplomatic?<\/li>\n<li>Arrogance vs humility when dealing with employees vs customers?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over the years, I have learnt that no single approach wins, and more than that it&#8217;s a matter of personal style, your own temperament, etc. However, we always look for case-studies in testing times. We learn from others and their mistakes. The challenge is which one to adopt and how do I know a specific behaviour is suited for a personal style.<\/p>\n<p>Time will tell, but the torrent of conflict continues and the quest for wisdom is hungrier than never before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Off-topic: <\/strong>I seriously feel that Walter Isaacson should do a bio on Buffett.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It took me more than 6-months each to read The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life few years ago, followed by Steve Jobs biography last year.
